The Supreme Court of Iran has rejected the second request for a retrial submitted by Hatem Ozdemir, a Kurdish political prisoner from Turkey.
According to an informed source, on May 10, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed the second request for retrial for this political prisoner, and the ruling has been officially communicated to his attorney.
The first request for retrial submitted by Hatem Ozdemir was denied by the branch 39 of the Supreme Court in March 2025.
In September 2024, the death sentence for this Kurdish political prisoner from Turkey was upheld by the Supreme Court. he was sentenced to death for “moharabeh” (waging war against god) on April 2924, by the third branch of the Revolutionary Court in urmia, by presiding Judge Najafzadeh.
The initial court hearing for Mr. Osdemir took place on April 24, 2024, in the third branch of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia, and on Sunday, May 19, 2024, this ruling was officially communicated to him in Urmia Prison.
On January 28, 2023, the death sentence for Hatem Ozdemir was overturned by the branch nine of the Supreme Court, presiding by chief judge Qasim Mozeinani, and his case was referred back for retrial to an equivalent branch of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia.
Hatem Ozdemir, was sentenced to death for "rebellion" and to five years of imprisonment for "membership in the PKK" by the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Khoy on March 9, 2022. The verdict was officially communicated to this Kurdish citizen from Turkey in Urmia Prison on March 15, 2022.
The latest hearing regarding Hatem Ozdemir’s charges took place in late summer 2021 in the first branch of the Revolutionary Court of Khoy.
Mr. Ozdemir was arrested on July 2, 2019, following an armed confrontation between the forces of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Hamzeh brigade of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the border areas of Chaldoran.
During this armed conflict, Hatem Ozdemir lost consciousness due to a mortar shell explosion and was subsequently taken to the intelligence detention center of the IRGC in Urmia.
Mr. Ozdemir was moved from the detention center of the IRGC to the central prison in Urmia in late August 2019 after two months of interrogation.
